Blue Balloon Innovative Limited proudly held a research seminar presented by Professor. Ralph Tyrrell Rockafellar in association with the department of applied mathematics of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. A discussion panel followed after the excellent talk given by Professor Rockafellar on the latest development in the theory of mathematical optimization. The newly developed theory of “variational convexity”, a special characteristic of an optimal solution to an (embedded) optimization problem describing local monotonicity in relation to a local second-order optimality was introduced with illustrations of practical applicability. The theory provides an alternative prospective in viewing the second-order optimality condition of a class of proper lower-semicontinuous problems without having to develop an entire system of analytical tools, e.g., calculus. The theory (still largely under development) opens up potential to apply algorithms designed for convex problems to such special class of non-convex problems yet still with theoretical guarantees.
Developments of efficient algorithms for non-convex problems are one of the fundamental challenges in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Stochastic Data Analytics, etc.
